Kumkumadi Oil: The Miracle Potion
Share
Kumkumadi originates from the Sanskrit word Kumkum, which translates to saffron. It is an ayurvedic preparation, originated in India as a ‘miracle concoction’ thousands of years back. It is believed to have been prepared by the Ashwini Kumaras- the twin Hindu Gods associated with medicine, health and science. It was one of the hundreds of formulations of divine herbs they brought into the earth to help humankind. The sacred, miraculous elixir is said to bring you a glow like gold to your skin when you apply it.
Originally made of 26 precious ingredients it was enriched with natural goodness. Some of the ingredients were:
1. Saffron (Kumkuma) – Brightens the complexion, reduces pigmentation and fights acne with its powerful antioxidant properties.
2. Sandalwood (Lal Chandan) – Soothes inflammation, enhances skin texture, and provides a cooling effect while reducing acne and scars.
3. Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia) – Detoxifies and purifies the skin, helping with hyperpigmentation, acne and uneven skin tone.
4. Liquorice (Yashtimadhu / Glycyrrhiza glabra) – Naturally brightens skin, reduces dark spots and soothes sensitive or irritated skin.
5. Turmeric (Curcuma longa / Haldi) – A powerful anti-inflammatory that fights acne, reduces redness, and leaves the skin glowing.
6. Lotus (Kamal kesar / Nelumbo nucifera) – Hydrates, controls excess oil, and improves skin elasticity with its rich antioxidant content.
7. Sesame Oil (Thila Thailam) – Deeply nourishes, protects against UV damage, and enhances skin elasticity while preventing breakouts.
8. Almond Oil – Rich in vitamin E, it deeply hydrates, reduces dark circles, and helps repair and soothe sensitive skin.
9. Argan Oil – A lightweight moisturizer that hydrates, fights aging, and strengthens the skin barrier without clogging pores.
10. Vetiver (Ushira / Vetiveria zizanioides) – Cools and firms the skin, reduces wrinkles, and helps heal scars and irritation.
11. Rose Water (Gulab Jal) – Refreshes and hydrates the skin, balances pH levels, and soothes redness while preventing acne.
Here are some of the many benefits of Kumkumadi:
-
Brightening skin tone: With saffron as one of its ingredients, rich in antioxidants, Kumkumadi oil brings a natural radiance to your skin. It also helps fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation, leaving your skin even-toned with the help of ingredients like majistha, liquorice etc.
-
Anti-ageing properties: Ingredients like saffron and sandalwood in Kumkumadi oil helps you with maintaining a young skin. Rich in antioxidants, it reduces oxidant stress, thereby preventing pre-mature ageing. With collagen production, it helps with skin elasticity and reducing fine lines and wrinkles.
-
Acne and blemish reduction: Due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, Kumkumadi oil is highly beneficial for acne reduction, unlike other facial oils. Herbs like neem and manjistha help in soothing inflammation, controlling excess sebum production and healing acne scars.
-
Sun protection and damage repair: Saffron, again, plays a crucial role in protecting the skin from sun damage. In addition to protecting the skim from UV rays exposure, it also reduces sun spots and pigmentation. (Sunscreen is recommended even after applying Kumkumadi oil)
-
Moisturisation and hydration: Kumkumadi oil is an excellent moisturiser, suitable for both dry and oily skin types. Ingredients like sesame oil provides immense nourishment by releasing fatty acids and vitamins, and hydration by penetrating deep into the skin.
