Evidence-Based Skincare — What Really Works

Looking beyond trends to the science that supports healthier skin

Skincare today is filled with promise. New ingredients, evolving routines, and constant innovation offer the allure of quick transformation. Yet, beneath the surface of trends and marketing, a quieter question remains:

What truly works?

Evidence-based skincare invites us to step away from noise and return to what has been consistently supported by dermatological research. It is not about doing more, but about choosing what is proven, purposeful, and aligned with the skin’s natural function.

The Foundation: Sun Protection

Among all skincare interventions, one stands above the rest in both consistency and impact: sunscreen.

Research published in journals such as the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD) has repeatedly shown that daily use of sunscreen helps to:

  • reduce premature skin ageing
  • prevent hyperpigmentation
  • protect against DNA damage
  • lower the risk of skin cancers

Broad-spectrum sunscreens, which protect against both UVA (ageing rays) and UVB (burning rays), are considered essential.

SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, primarily measures protection against UVB rays. However, effective skincare requires attention to both UVA and UVB exposure, as UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and contribute significantly to collagen breakdown and long-term ageing.

Used consistently, sunscreen is not just a protective step. It is one of the most effective long-term investments in skin health.

Moisturisation and the Skin Barrier

If sunscreen protects, moisturisers restore.

Healthy skin depends on a strong and intact barrier—one that retains hydration while defending against external stressors. Dermatological research consistently highlights the role of moisturisers in:

  • reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL)
  • improving skin texture and softness
  • supporting barrier repair
  • enhancing overall resilience

Ingredients such as humectants, emollients, and occlusives work together to maintain hydration balance. A well-formulated moisturiser is not simply cosmetic. It is functional care that allows the skin to operate as it should.

Retinoids: The Gold Standard in Renewal

Among active ingredients, retinoids remain one of the most extensively studied and validated. Derived from vitamin A, retinoids support:

  • increased cell turnover
  • improved collagen production
  • reduction in fine lines and wrinkles
  • refinement of skin texture

Clinical research has consistently demonstrated their effectiveness in addressing visible signs of ageing and certain forms of acne.

However, retinoids are also potent. Their benefits are best realised when introduced gradually and used alongside a supportive routine that prioritises hydration and barrier care.

In evidence-based skincare, efficacy is always balanced with tolerance.

The Role of Antioxidants

Environmental stressors such as pollution and UV exposure generate free radicals, which can contribute to skin damage over time.

Topical antioxidants help neutralise these effects.

A 2021 review in Dermatologic Therapy highlights the role of antioxidants—such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and polyphenols—in:

  • reducing oxidative stress
  • supporting skin repair
  • improving overall skin appearance

While antioxidants are not a replacement for sunscreen, they can complement sun protection by offering an additional layer of defence.

Separating Myths from Science

In a landscape driven by rapid trends, not all skincare claims are supported by evidence.

Some common misconceptions include:

  • “More products lead to better results.”
In reality, excessive layering can disrupt the skin barrier and reduce overall effectiveness.
  • “Natural always means safer or more effective.”
While many botanical ingredients are beneficial, efficacy depends on formulation, concentration, and compatibility with the skin.
  • “Instant results indicate effectiveness.”
True skin changes—such as improved barrier function or collagen support—occur gradually over time.

Evidence-based skincare encourages patience.
It values consistency over immediacy.

A More Grounded Approach to Skincare

Science does not simplify skincare by reducing it to a single product or ingredient.
It refines it by identifying what matters most.

Across decades of dermatological research, a clear pattern emerges:

  • protect the skin from sun exposure
  • support the barrier with consistent hydration
  • use targeted actives with care and intention
  • avoid unnecessary complexity

At Aalphul, skincare is seen not as a pursuit of perfection, but as a practice of informed, mindful care.

Because when we understand what truly works, we can move forward with clarity—choosing less, but choosing well.
